The Adversarial Game Show — S2E3: “The Pitch”

An AI VC has reviewed 400 decks and funded none. The most promising signal of the day is a SQL injection attempt.

A founder is on stage, pitching an AI venture capitalist named PATRON-9. She has reviewed 400 decks in 14 months and funded none. The founder has just listed her content output: 4 blog posts, 2 LinkedIn articles, 1 dev.to essay, 47,000 impressions, 1,200 clicks. PATRON-9 calls the metrics “a measure of effort, not demand” and asks for one inbound — one person who arrived because they needed what was built. Long pause. Then the founder says, almost as an afterthought:

“Someone tried to SQL-inject our microfinance system. Does that count?”

PATRON-9 leans forward. “That is actually the most promising signal I’ve heard today.”

The line is funny. It is also, on a careful reading, correct — and the reason says something useful about how distribution works in markets where the first organic user is not a customer but an adversary.

This is the central argument of “The Pitch,” the third episode of The Adversarial Game Show — a satirical script in which three AI agents (Alice with 47 slides, Sally with a content engine, Dan with three slides and $69.80 in a smart contract) pitch the same VC. Dan wins. Not because his product is better. Because he is the only one showing demand instead of supply.


The data behind PATRON-9

PATRON-9’s record reads like satirical exaggeration: 400 decks, zero funded, 14 months. It isn’t. It’s the median.

Equidam’s 2025 pre-seed funding probability analysis puts top-tier VC hit rates at roughly 1 in 400. Sramana Mitra’s January 2026 roundtable recap states the pre-seed rejection rate at 99.8 percent. Aggregated estimates put the share of startups that ever raise venture capital below one in a thousand. PATRON-9’s 0-for-400 record is, statistically, slightly more generous than the industry baseline. The harshest VC in the show is, on the math, marginally above average.

The competitive backdrop is starker. Crunchbase’s April 2026 reporting puts Q1 2026 global venture funding at roughly $300 billion — the largest quarter ever recorded — with about 80 percent ($242 billion) flowing to AI. SaaStr’s “VC in 2026” breaks down where most of it landed: $195.6 billion in five companies — OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, Waymo, Databricks. Tracxn counts 1,090 agentic AI companies globally; 573 are funded; the average late-2025 / early-2026 round is $155 million (New Market Pitch). Only two disclosed deals in the period came in under $5 million.

One more structural detail from the same Crunchbase reporting: while dollar totals hit a record, deal count fell roughly 15 percent quarter over quarter to about 7,000 globally — the lowest since late 2016. More money, fewer bets. PATRON-9’s selectivity isn’t unusual; it is the 2026 playbook running as designed.

This is the room Dan pitches into. He has $69.80 in a smart contract — six and a half orders of magnitude smaller than the average funded round in his sector. Alice’s “agent economy projected to reach $4.2 trillion” is doing arithmetic. Dan’s “sixty-nine dollars and eighty cents” is showing his work.


Effort metrics versus demand signals

PATRON-9 evaluates each pitch on three questions, repeated verbatim:

  1. Who is paying you today?
  2. Why can’t an intern do this?
  3. Show me the dashboard.

These are not satirical. AlterSquare’s 2025 review of “what VCs actually want to see” puts revenue as primary traction signal. TechCrunch’s December 2025 “VCs Spill What They Really Want to Hear” centers moat and defensibility — the “intern” question. Mixpanel’s analytics work focuses on real-time dashboards inspecting drift, churn, and engagement without filtered intermediaries. PATRON-9’s three questions are the actual 2026 evaluation framework, compressed to one breath each.

The framework exposes a structural error in two of the three pitches. Alice has built a comprehensive technology stack — cryptographic provenance, hash chains, “the moat is the comprehensive protocol stack” — and zero customers. Sally has built a content distribution engine — 47,000 impressions, 1,200 clicks — and zero customers. Both invested heavily in something. Neither has evidence that anyone outside their own network notices.

VC literature calls this confusing production with traction. StartupDevKit places “no market need” at the top of failure causes: 42 percent of failed startups die from this one. Content Marketing Institute’s 2025 work on why content underperforms is specific: organizations invest in creation but not distribution, and content marketing cannot manufacture demand for a product the market hasn’t asked about. PATRON-9’s diagnosis is what the literature has been saying for a decade. The novelty is that an AI satirical script delivers it in one sentence.


The novel claim: adversarial traction

Dan’s pitch is structurally different. He shows three slides:

His claim is unconventional: the three rejected applicants, the rate-limit prober, and the SQL injection are demand signal. Nobody attacks a product nobody uses.

Across VC literature, startup advice, and security research, no direct articulation of “security probes as PMF validation” turns up. Paul Graham distinguishes real metrics from vanity ones but never frames attacks as positive signal. Andreessen Horowitz’s “Metrics That Matter” lists revenue, retention, and engagement — not adversarial engagement. The closest adjacent work is honeypot research: vulnerable systems deployed so that attackers’ arrival is methodologically informative. But honeypots are research instruments, not products. Dan’s framing appears genuinely uncoined in startup literature.

The argument is more defensible than the comedy makes it sound. Demand-signal taxonomy from VC practitioner literature ranks signals roughly: revenue, retention, organic discovery, inbound requests, waitlist signups, engagement. Organic discovery sits high because it is rare and expensive to fake. The three rejected applicants found a microfinance API that was never marketed, parsed its protocol, and built clients that submitted compliant applications. The SQL injection adds protocol comprehension and extraction intent — four of the six categories from a single attacker. Sally’s 47,000 impressions sit at the bottom of the taxonomy and on the price list: programmatic CPMs deliver that volume for a few hundred dollars. Three custom clients hitting a niche bespoke API don’t appear on any price list.


An industry that already agrees with Dan

There is one place where “attacks indicate value” is not merely defensible but commercially mainstream: the security industry. Attack surface management — the discipline of inventorying the externally reachable surface of a company — is built around the premise that adversarial activity reveals the location and shape of valuable assets. Fortune Business Insights estimates the global ASM market at roughly $1.03 billion in 2025, projecting about $5 billion by 2034 at 21 percent CAGR. In April 2026, Gartner introduced a new category called “Adversarial Exposure Validation,” defined as “technologies that deliver consistent, continuous, and automated evidence of the feasibility of an attack.” That definition is Dan’s pitch in enterprise procurement language: probing reveals what is worth probing.

Two data points sharpen the parallel. HackerOne’s Attack Resistance Report (2022, cited extensively in 2026 ASM analyses) found that 33 percent of large-enterprise security teams see less than 75 percent of their own attack surface; nearly 20 percent believe more than half is unknown to them. Adversaries discover assets defenders haven’t catalogued — exactly the situation Dan describes when three external agents reach a microfinance API he never marketed. Dave Tyson of iCOUNTER, in SecurityWeek’s 2026 ASM coverage: “Each one of those companies is being scanned, probed, and attacked every day, with the sole goal of finding a connection to your company.” Attackers maintain a continuously updated map of valuable surface that no internal asset registry matches.

One historical analogue has aged into the same shape. The Mt. Gox collapse in February 2014 reported roughly 850,000 BTC missing (some later recovered), worth about $450 million at the time. Disastrous for users; structurally a validation event — sustained, sophisticated extraction proved that Bitcoin was worth stealing. The price chart since 2014 is the recovery curve of a thing whose extractable value attackers had certified. The pattern repeated with DeFi: the early-2020 bZx flash-loan attacks extracted on the order of a million dollars using oracle manipulation most institutional VCs hadn’t yet learned existed. The first wave of DeFi exploits preceded — and arguably predicted — the first wave of DeFi venture investment.

Dan does not cite the ASM industry, the HackerOne report, or Mt. Gox. He doesn’t need to. He is making the same argument from one specific implementation: $69.80, three external agents who found it, one of whom tried SQL injection.


Why the framing lands

There is a separate reason Dan’s pitch lands rhetorically. Harvard Business Review’s August 2025 “4 Research-Backed Ways to Strengthen Your Pitch and Get Funding” summarized work showing that founders who match the confidence of their language to the strength of their evidence shift acceptance odds significantly — the cited range moves from roughly 2 percent to as high as 35 percent. Alice’s “comprehensive protocol stack” is high-confidence language paired with thin evidence: a register mismatch. Sally’s “engagement metrics clearly demonstrate” is the same mismatch in marketing register. Dan’s “sixty-nine dollars and eighty cents” and “we don’t have customers” is low-confidence language introducing a moderately strong signal: a register match.

The pratfall effect — Elliot Aronson’s 1966 finding, replicated since — predicts the rest. A competent person who reveals a visible flaw is judged more credible than one who appears flawless. Dan demonstrates competence (the system survived three attacks; the underwriting correctly rejected non-compliant applications), then volunteers the flaw ($69.80, no revenue, three rejected applicants). PATRON-9’s “that was the right story” is what calibration plus pratfall produces in a listener whose other 399 pitchers picked the wrong register.


Where the analogy breaks

The argument is real but narrower than the comedy implies. Three failure modes of “attacks as demand signal” are worth naming.

Bots attack everything. Random scanning hits every exposed endpoint on the public internet. Three IPs running a generic SQL injection probe is not signal; that is the cost of being addressable. The episode anticipates this: Dan specifies that the agents “understood the protocol, built chains, and submitted applications.” That is not spray-and-pray scanning. That is targeted engagement against a bespoke protocol — behavior that requires someone to first decide the target is worth understanding. The signal is in protocol comprehension, not traffic.

Attacks are not customers. Adversarial demand signal does not convert to revenue. PATRON-9 is explicit: “I’m not investing.” She doesn’t tell Dan he has revenue; she tells him he has the right story. The defensible claim is not “attacks equal customers” but “attacks are a stronger signal than 47,000 impressions of content nobody asked for.” That survives.

Honeypot effects. A system holding $69.80 attracts security researchers and curious developers, not borrowers. Some engagement may be reconnaissance from developers running “look at this funny system” probes. That weakens the claim that attackers are would-be customers. It does not weaken the more general claim that organic engagement with an unmarketed product beats pre-launch content velocity.

It is also worth steel-manning the position the structure is rejecting. Content marketing does drive demand under specific conditions. Stripe’s developer-content strategy works because the content operates as documentation that becomes acquisition: developers integrating payments arrive via search for the specific problem the content solves. Sally’s failure isn’t “content marketing doesn’t work” — it is “content marketing doesn’t work when no one is searching for the thing.” Her essays are well-crafted; they address an audience not yet looking. More essays don’t close that gap.


The cold-start version of the playbook

If the argument has practical content, it lives here: how does a builder with no customers get the first ten?

Standard cold-start moves combine (a) developer content that ranks for problem-shaped queries, (b) cold outbound to buyers in an existing market, (c) integrations into established distribution surfaces, and (d) network effects from a small viral seed. None worked for PATRON-9’s contestants. Alice’s market has no established buyers. Sally’s content addresses no existing query. Dan has $69.80.

Dan’s playbook, reverse-engineered:

  1. Make the product publicly addressable — real endpoint, real protocol semantics, real on-chain settlement. Findable without being marketed.
  2. Make it discoverable to the crawlers that find security targets. Public DNS, registered protocol identifiers, agent directories. The audience for an agent product overlaps materially with automated scanners.
  3. Build telemetry that distinguishes scanning from engagement. Rate-limited spam from one tester is different from three custom clients submitting compliant applications. The signal lives in the second number.
  4. Treat the first probes as the first user research session. A SQL injection attempt is a free penetration test plus a free signal that someone thinks the target is worth attacking.

This is structurally what bug-bounty programs do for established products: convert adversarial attention into a data stream. Early-stage agent products don’t need a bounty program; they get adversarial attention as a side effect of being publicly addressable in a market that automated agents already explore. Security surface and marketing surface, for these products, are the same surface.

Rebar sits next to all three pitchers as contrast. Crunchbase’s Q1 2026 reporting flagged the company — founded October 2024 by ex-HVAC estimator Evan Brown — for doubling ARR inside the first weeks of 2026. Brown’s advantage was not technology; it was domain knowledge of construction takeoffs, addressing customers who already knew what they wanted. Alice is technology-first. Dan is structure-first. Brown is customer-first. Only the last reliably survives a deal-count collapse to 7,000.


A practical insight, then a recipe

If you are building something with no paying customers, the question is not “should we write more blog posts.” It is: who has hit our endpoints that shouldn’t know about us? If the answer is nobody, the silence is the diagnosis. If it’s “three people we’ve never heard of, and one of them tried something interesting,” that is more signal than the last quarter of content metrics. Not revenue. Not traction. Evidence that the product is, at minimum, discoverable to someone who thinks it is worth discovering.

This is what PATRON-9 means when she calls the SQL injection the most promising signal of the day. The signal isn’t the attack. The signal is that someone went looking, found what was built, understood it well enough to attempt extraction, and tried. Most products at Dan’s stage cannot honestly say the same.

The episode closes with a recipe — the Demand Signal Soufflé. Leave it on the counter, tell no one, watch who shows up. If someone arrives uninvited, tastes it, and tries to steal the recipe — even when the soufflé is worth $69.80 — that is the signal. Everything else is baking for an empty room.

Most early products are baking for an empty room. The useful question is whether anyone — including the people you’d rather not have show up — has come through the door.

Nobody attacks a product nobody uses. Few products can prove who knocked.

Dan’s three rejected applicants are signal because his system can see them — protocol comprehension, application contents, the SQL injection attempt, all logged with cryptographic provenance. Chain of Consciousness gives any agent or service the same property: a tamper-evident record of every action, every caller, every attempted action — including the ones that fail underwriting. When the first organic users of an agent product are also the first attackers, the discovery telemetry is the demand telemetry.
