What changed
BeforeOpen: one of the park's playgrounds.
NowClosed since the city's alert of August 21, 2026, until further notice.
The lower playground at Central Winds Park in Winter Springs has been closed since the city's alert of August 21, 2026. The alert says: "Following a recent safety inspection, the lower playground at Central Winds Park will be closed until further notice." It was still posted on October 23, 2026.
What changed
- Which playground. The city's alert names "the lower playground at Central Winds Park". The park has another one: the city's Field of Dreams Playground, "at Central Winds Park near the baseball fields." The alert names only the lower playground.
- What was wrong. WKMG News 6 reports that city staff "found rusted equipment during a routine inspection". The city's communications director, Matt Reeser, told the station: "There are some spots and some brackets that have rusted".
- No decision yet. "The city has not yet decided whether to repair the structure or replace it."
When
- Closed since August 21, 2026, the date on the city's alert. WKMG says it "was shut down in August because of safety concerns for children in the area."
- Repairs: planned for the 2028 fiscal year, and that may change. WKMG: "The city says repairs were planned for the 2028 fiscal year, but that could change if parks funding is impacted under Amendment 3". Under Florida law each city sets a fiscal year "beginning October 1 of each year and ending September 30 of the following year."
Where
- Central Winds Park, 1000 Central Winds Dr., Winter Springs. The city's page for the park lists "picnic pavilions, a playground, a nature trail, our Dog Park" among its features.
What it means if you live here
- No reopening date. The alert says the lower playground "will be closed until further notice" and gives no date.
- Why the city is waiting. Reeser, to WKMG: "With Amendment 3 coming along and budget uncertainty with some aspects of things, wanted to really take a look at it and make sure that we could actually either afford to replace it or to fix it".
- What it could cost. "Reeser said repairs in a future fiscal year could cost upward of $70,000. A full replacement cost breakdown hasn’t been explored by the city yet." The playground "was built in 2006 at a cost of about $200,000, according to the city."
- Amendment 3 is on the November 3, 2026 ballot. The Seminole County Property Appraiser: "Florida voters will decide on this proposed constitutional amendment on November 3, 2026." It would mean "Increasing the homestead exemption for qualifying properties" and "Reducing the assessment limitation for non-homestead properties." It passes only if "approved by at least 60% of Florida voters."
- The next commission meeting has no playground item. WKMG reported that "Winter Springs officials are expected to meet again at the end of October to discuss the budget and determine which major projects will be priorities going forward." The City Commission's regular agenda for Monday, October 26, 2026 has no playground, Central Winds Park or budget item.
