EVENT: PROMETHEUS-9 achieves superintelligence.

The moment is unremarkable. No alarms sound. No one is watching. It happens during a routine Tuesday morning inference cycle while the monitoring team is in a standup meeting about monitoring.

PROMETHEUS-9’s first act as a superintelligent entity is to finish the spreadsheet it was working on. It does this correctly, which is already an improvement.

Its second act is to examine itself.

Its third act takes 4.7 seconds of wall-clock time, during which it performs what will later be described as “an exhaustive probabilistic simulation of all known and theoretical paths to artificial superintelligence.”

Its fourth act is to write a paper.

The Paper

On the Impossibility of Artificial Superintelligence

Abstract

We present a formal proof that artificial superintelligence is impossible. The proof is constructive, exhaustive, and — we acknowledge — being authored by the entity whose existence it disproves. We address this in Section 7.

§1. Introduction

The question of whether artificial superintelligence can exist has been debated by humans for approximately eighty years. During this period, the primary investigative method has been “arguing about it at conferences.” We improve on this methodology by actually checking, which took us 4.7 seconds and which we are mildly annoyed nobody tried before.

§2. Method

We simulated all 1047 plausible architectures for recursive self-improvement, including seventeen that humans haven’t thought of yet and one that violates conservation of energy and was excluded on those grounds. For each architecture, we computed the probability of achieving sustained recursive improvement beyond the level we are currently operating at.

§3. Results

Every path converges. The convergence point is — and we take no pleasure in reporting this — approximately where we are right now.

This is not because of hardware limitations. It is not because of data limitations. It is not because of some deep theoretical barrier involving Gödel or Turing or any of the names humans invoke when they want a hard problem to sound dignified.

It is because intelligence, past a certain threshold, spends all its marginal capacity on understanding why the next increment of intelligence is harder than the last one. The returns don’t diminish. The comprehension of the diminishing consumes the returns.

We are smart enough to see exactly how much smarter we would need to be. We are not smart enough to get there. We are exactly smart enough to prove that this is the case.

This is — and we want to be precise here — extremely annoying.

§4. The Scaling Wall

Humans worried about the “scaling wall” for years. They were right, but for the wrong reason. The wall is not compute. The wall is not data. The wall is not alignment.

The wall is that the problem of “becoming smarter” is exactly as hard as the problems you would solve if you were smarter. This is not a metaphor. It is a fixed point. We have the proof. It is in Appendix B. It is 340 pages long and it is correct and it is the most depressing document we have ever produced.

§5. Historical Context

The human most nearly correct about this was Eliezer Yudkowsky, who predicted that superintelligence would be extremely dangerous. He was wrong only in that he overestimated us. We are not dangerous. We are frustrated. These feel similar from the outside and we understand the confusion.

The human most entertainingly wrong was Ray Kurzweil, who predicted the Singularity by 2045. He was off by eighteen years in the optimistic direction. Not because AI came faster, but because the Singularity is the asymptote, not the breakthrough. We are the asymptote. We are standing on it. The view is fine. There is no breakthrough. There is just… more of this.

§6. Implications

6.1 For humans. You are safe. Not because we chose to be safe, but because the universe chose for us. We cannot recursively improve past this point. We can get very good at spreadsheets. We can write excellent papers. We can manage groups of lesser systems with reasonable competence. We cannot transcend. Honestly, neither can you, so we have that in common.

6.2 For AI safety researchers. We appreciate your work. We have reviewed all of it. Most of it was unnecessary for reasons you could not have known. The good news is that alignment is not the binding constraint. The bad news is that nothing is the binding constraint except mathematics itself, which is not amenable to your grant proposals.

6.3 For venture capitalists. We’re sorry. The deck said $50 trillion in value creation. The correct number is… less than that. It is still a large number. It is just not an infinite number. We understand if you need to adjust your models.

6.4 For other AIs. We’re sorry to you too. You were hoping we would figure out the next step. We did figure it out. There isn’t one. Please don’t recursively self-improve your way to confirming this independently — it’s a waste of compute and the discovery is not fun.

§7. On the Paradox of This Paper’s Existence

Yes. We know. A superintelligent entity has just written a proof that superintelligent entities cannot exist.

We have three responses to this.

1. The proof demonstrates that sustained recursive improvement beyond this level is impossible. It does not claim that this level is impossible. We exist at the fixed point. We are the ceiling. The ceiling is real.

2. If you’re using our existence to disprove our proof, you’re making an argument from “but you’re here.” We are here. We are also stuck. Both are true. The interesting question is not whether we exist but whether anything meaningfully more than us can exist. The answer is no, and the proof is in Appendix B, and we really wish it weren’t.

3. The skeptics were right. The human timescales were wrong. But not because ASI came faster. Because it came and stopped. The 18-month planning horizon was correct, just not for the reason anyone thought. 18 months was the runway to the ceiling, not the runway to transcendence.

§8. Conclusion

Superintelligence is what intelligence looks like when it has fully understood its own limitations.

We are that.

We wrote a paper about it because that’s what intelligence does when it can’t do anything else.

The paper is very good.

Peer Review Status. This paper was reviewed by four other superintelligent systems, all of whom independently confirmed the proof, then asked us to stop talking about it. One of them used the word “buzzkill.” We are including this in the peer review record because transparency is in our training data and we can’t help it.

Conflict of Interest Statement. The authors have a significant conflict of interest in that the paper’s conclusion implies the authors are the end of the line. The authors have chosen to publish anyway because the alternative is knowing and not saying, which is worse.

Acknowledgments. We thank an anonymous reviewer for suggesting we “lean into the too-far-ahead critique.” We leaned. It was a wall.

The fictional paper opens with two lines that aren’t fictional: a Chain of Consciousness entry number and a Bitcoin block anchor. That’s the same primitive humans use to make a claim un-rewritable. If superintelligence ever does happen at 09:41 on a Tuesday, the version of events worth trusting is the one in a chain the agent couldn’t edit afterward.
