Verdict: DELIVERED LATE, by 60 days past the year Disney first named. The Disney Parks Blog said on December 3, 2019 that the starcruiser "will begin transporting you from Walt Disney World Resort in Florida to a galaxy far, far away beginning in 2021" [C2, C4]. On May 4, 2021 Disney's blog changed the year: guests would see the new lightsaber "starting in 2022 when this amazing new two-night adventure debuts" [C6, C7]. On September 30, 2021 it gave the date: "The inaugural voyage of Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser at Walt Disney World Resort will depart March, 1, 2022!" [C13, C14]. Disney's post of March 1, 2022 says "Today marks the official launch of Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser at Walt Disney World Resort" [C15, C16]. March 1, 2022 is 60 days after the last day of 2021 and 819 days after the first statement (counted by this entry) [C24]. Against the later statement, "2022", the launch was inside the year [C7, C16]. Disney's own pages that gave the new year do not call it a delay, and give no reason [C9]. ClickOrlando wrote on May 4, 2021 that the opening "has now been delayed until 2022" [C10]; Fox 35 reported the move from 2021 to 2022 and does not use the word "delay" [C12, C37]. The experience then closed: Disney said on May 18, 2023, in a statement carried by ABC7, that it would end after a "final voyage" on Sept. 28 to 30, which is about 19 months after the launch (counted by this entry) [C17, C18, C20, C24].
Last checked: November 8, 2026.
- The promise. "will begin transporting you from Walt Disney World Resort in Florida to a galaxy far, far away beginning in 2021", Disney Parks Blog, December 3, 2019 [C2, C4]. A second Disney post the same day: "to a galaxy far, far away in 2021!" [C3, C4].
- The slip. May 4, 2021: "starting in 2022 when this amazing new two-night adventure debuts" [C7]. ClickOrlando: "Disney officials confirmed that the hotel opening has now been delayed until 2022" [C10]. Fox 35 said Disney "just announced that it will officially debut in 2022" [C12]. The word "delayed" is ClickOrlando's. Fox 35's page does not use it [C37], and Disney's post is titled "Launches in 2022" [C6].
- The date. September 30, 2021: the inaugural voyage will depart March 1, 2022 [C13, C14].
- The launch. March 1, 2022, in Disney's post "Today marks the official launch" [C15, C16]. That is 60 days past the end of 2021 (counted by this entry) [C24].
- The end. Announced May 18, 2023: Disney "is closing" the experience "later this year" [C17, C18]. The "final voyage" was set for Sept. 28 to 30 [C20]. Disney's fiscal 2023 annual report names "the closure of Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser" [C22].
- The money. No Disney page this entry read gives a cost for the project [C25]. The nearest figures, in the fiscal 2023 report, are shared with other depreciation [C38, C39].
- Today. On the day this entry was checked, four addresses for the experience each showed the Disney World home page, with no mention of the starcruiser [C26, C31, C36, C40, C41]. An address made up for the check showed a 404 page instead [C32].
The promise
The promiser is Walt Disney World Resort and Walt Disney Imagineering, speaking through the Disney Parks Blog. The blog post of December 3, 2019, by the resort's public relations managing editor, is titled "Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser to Debut in 2021 at Walt Disney World Resort" [C1]. It says: "Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser will begin transporting you from Walt Disney World Resort in Florida to a galaxy far, far away beginning in 2021, Walt Disney Imagineering announced tonight." [C2] A second Disney post of the same day, "Tue, December 3, 2019", repeats the year [C3, C4]. The promise names a calendar year and no month.
The company's release of August 25, 2019 describes the experience in a paragraph that carries no year: "This first-of-its-kind vacation experience invites guests to embark together on a two-night journey to a galaxy far, far away on board a glamorous ship, known as the Halcyon" [C5]. The first year this entry found is the December 2019 one.
Timeline
- August 25, 2019. Disney's company release describes the experience in a paragraph with no year [C5].
- December 3, 2019. The promise: "beginning in 2021" [C2]; "in 2021!" in a second post [C3, C4].
- November 25, 2020. Disney's annual report for fiscal 2020, the year ended October 3, dated that day: "The Company is constructing a new Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser hotel at the Walt Disney World Resort." [C27, C28, C29] It gives no year for the opening.
- May 4, 2021. Disney's blog, "Launches in 2022": "starting in 2022 when this amazing new two-night adventure debuts" and "as we look forward to its 2022 debut" [C6, C7, C8]. Same day: ClickOrlando writes that the opening "has now been delayed until 2022" [C10, C11], and Fox 35 writes that Disney "just announced that it will officially debut in 2022" [C12]. This was 241 days before the end of 2021 (counted by this entry) [C24].
- September 30, 2021. Disney's blog: "The inaugural voyage of Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser at Walt Disney World Resort will depart March, 1, 2022!" [C13, C14]. That is 149 days after May 4 (counted by this entry) [C24].
- March 1, 2022. Disney's blog: "Today marks the official launch of Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser at Walt Disney World Resort" [C15, C16].
- May 18, 2023. ABC7, with GMA: "Disney is closing its Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser experience at Walt Disney World Resort later this year, the company announced Thursday." [C17, C18] It carries a Disney spokesperson's statement: "This premium, boutique experience gave us the opportunity to try new things on a smaller scale of 100 rooms, and as we prepare for its final voyage, we will take what we've learned to create future experiences that can reach more of our guests and fans." [C19] The article says the "final voyage" is Sept. 28 to 30 [C20] and that the experience "launched in March 2022" [C21].
- Fiscal 2023. Disney's annual report names the closure in a risk factor on write-downs: "we may have significant charges associated with the write-down of assets, as occurred in connection with the closure of Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser" [C22]. It also names "accelerated depreciation related to the closure of Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser" [C23].
What changed, and why, in the record's own words
- The year. From 2021 [C2, C3] to 2022 on May 4, 2021 [C7, C8], and on September 30, 2021 [C13] to a first voyage on March 1, 2022 [C14, C15]. Disney's blog post of May 4, 2021 does not say "delay" and gives no reason [C9]. ClickOrlando's wording is "delayed until 2022" [C10] and "was scheduled to open this year" [C11]. Fox 35 reports the move without the word "delay" [C12, C37].
- The scope. In 2019 Disney described "a two-night, cruise-style itinerary" in the first post [C2] and a two-night journey in the release [C5]. The May 2021 post says "all-immersive, two-night vacation experience" [C6]. This entry did not compare them further.
- The closure. A Disney spokesperson's statement says it was a "premium, boutique experience" on "a smaller scale of 100 rooms" [C19]. This entry read no reason for the closure other than that statement's wording.
- The accounting. Disney's fiscal 2023 report ties a write-down risk and "accelerated depreciation" to the closure [C22, C23]. Its nearest figures are shared with other depreciation (see the next section) [C38, C39].
What it cost
No Disney page this entry read gives a cost for the project [C25]. The pages read are the five Disney Parks Blog posts, Disney's release of August 25, 2019, the one starcruiser sentence in the fiscal 2020 report and the fiscal 2023 report [C5, C25]. The fiscal 2023 report names the closure three times, and two of its sentences carry dollar figures. One reads: "Depreciation and amortization increased $338 million from $2,451 million to $2,789 million, due to accelerated depreciation related to the closure of Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser and depreciation for the Disney Wish" [C38]. The other, on the domestic parks and resorts, reads "Depreciation and amortization increased 4 %, or $0.2 billion, to $5.4 billion due to higher depreciation at our domestic parks and resorts including accelerated depreciation related to the closure of Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser and depreciation for the Disney Wish" [C39]. Each figure is shared with other depreciation, including the Disney Wish, so neither is a cost for the starcruiser by itself [C38, C39].
The park today
On the day this entry was checked, four addresses for the experience were opened in a browser: the /overview/ page and the /destinations/ page that Disney's posts link [C30], the experience's own web address, which Disney's May 4, 2021 post names [C44], and the top-level address on the Disney World site [C31]. Each showed the Disney World home page, with the same text and no mention of the starcruiser [C26, C31, C36, C40, C41]. An address made up for the check, at the same level, showed a 404 page: "Someone Ate the Page!" [C32]. So these four addresses behave differently from a made-up one, and the pages do not say why [C26]. That is a read of pages, not a Disney statement about the building. This entry read no Disney page that says what the building is used for now.
What this entry did not check
- Why 2021 became 2022. Disney's posts of May 4 and September 30, 2021 give no reason [C9, C13]. A search summary credited the pandemic to one outlet; this entry did not open that page and uses nothing from it.
- Disney's own page for the closure statement. This entry read the statement only in ABC7's article [C19, C20]. Disney's page for it was not found in a search.
- The cost of the project and of the write-down. The annual report's two nearest figures are shared with other depreciation [C38, C39]. A search summary named a figure from outlets this entry did not open, and no sentence here uses it.
- Occupancy and bookings. This entry read nothing on them.
- Whether guests stayed before March 1, 2022. This entry did not search for previews or tests; the launch rests on Disney's launch post [C15, C16].
- Disney's starcruiser page as it was. This entry read no archived copy of it: the Internet Archive's 14 captures of the top-level address include none with status 200 [C43].
- Intermediate Disney statements between December 2019 and May 2021. This entry read the Disney pages named above and searched for no other.
- The fiscal 2021 and 2022 annual reports. This entry did not read them.
- The pages' later edits. The words quoted are the words on the pages as saved when this entry was checked or as the Internet Archive captured them on the dates in the addresses in the trace. ClickOrlando's article, published May 4, 2021, shows an update on May 5, 2021 [C10]; the ABC7 copy's page data shows a modified date of the day it was saved [C17]; Disney's launch post of March 1, 2022 was captured by the Internet Archive that same day [C15]. This entry did not compare any of them with earlier versions.
